The Internal Revenue Service is preparing for a dramatic reduction in its workforce, potentially cutting up to half of its nearly 90,000 employees, according to a recent report.
The sweeping personnel changes are part of the Trump administration’s broader initiative to streamline government operations and enhance efficiency.
The proposed cuts have already begun to take shape, with approximately 7,000 probationary IRS employees losing their jobs in February.
The administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is spearheading the initiative, targeting significant reductions across federal agencies.
As part of the restructuring effort, IRS employees have been offered a “deferred resignation program” that provides full pay for several months while workers seek alternative employment, the Associated Press reported.
This approach aims to minimize the immediate economic impact on federal workers facing potential job loss.
Former IRS Commissioner John Koskinen has vocally opposed the proposed cuts, warning of potential consequences. In a recent New York Times op-ed, he argued that “Aggressive reductions in the I.R.S.’s resources will only render our government less effective and less efficient in collecting the taxes Congress has imposed.”
The Times reported that the Trump administration is implementing “reduction in force” plans across multiple government entities. When approached for comment about the reported layoffs, the IRS declined to provide additional information.
DOGE staffers Gavin Kliner and Sam Crocos have been actively working with the Trump administration to gain access to IRS databases and review the agency’s recent activities.
Their involvement suggests a comprehensive approach to government restructuring and potential oversight, according to The Post Millennial.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has launched a bold advertising campaign targeting federal employees who lost their jobs through Elon Musk’s DOGE, Resist the Mainstream covered on Tuesday.
“DOGE said you’re fired? We say you’re hired! New York wants you!” the ads, displayed in Washington D.C.’s Union Station and New York City’s Moynihan train stations, reportedly say.

Hochul extended an invitation when speaking directly to former federal employees.
“The current regime in Washington may not recognize your talents, but I can assure you New York State does,” she said. “We don’t vilify public servants. We value you. We cherish your contribution, and we do want to welcome you to the New York family.”
The governor further emphasized her state’s appreciation for government workers, adding, “In New York, we know it’s not the demagogues and the technocrats who make America great.”
“It’s public servants like Luke and all the people I just met, and countless who came before them, who dedicate their lives to serving others.”
Resist the Mainstream reported earlier this week on Musk now requiring federal employees to submit weekly updates detailing their work accomplishments, according to a second email sent by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) on behalf of DOGE.
The directive, which follows an initial request for similar information, mandates that all federal workers respond by 11:59 p.m. each Monday moving forward.
