UPDATE: Kash Patel has passed in a cloture vote by a margin of 48-45. Patel’s final confirmation vote could be as soon as Wednesday.
Howard Lutnick’s confirmation as Secretary of Commerce has been passed by a vote of 45-51.
The full Senate will take two key confirmation votes at 5:30 pm ET to confirm Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick as Commerce Secretary and to invoke cloture for a later vote on Kash Patel’s nomination as FBI Director.
Kash Patel’s vote is expected to be more contentious as the MAGA firebrand vies for the top position at the FBI, where he plans to root out corruption and the agency’s recent history of targeting innocent conservatives.

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy will step down after five years on the job.
Recall that in December, Louis DeJoy was grilled during a congressional hearing about his failures.
Lawmakers accuses Louis DeJoy of bankrupting the USPS. He covered his ears as representatives blamed him for the fall of the postal service.
Louis DeJoy announced his intention to step down on Monday and asked the Postal Service Board of Governors to replace him.

Louis DeJoy, the head of the U.S. Postal Service, intends to step down, the federal agency said Tuesday, after a nearly five-year tenure marked by the coronavirus pandemic, surges in mail-in election ballots and efforts to stem losses through cost and service cuts.
In a Monday letter, Postmaster General DeJoy asked the Postal Service Board of Governors to begin looking for his successor.
“As you know, I have worked tirelessly to lead the 640,000 men and women of the Postal Service in accomplishing an extraordinary transformation,” he wrote. “We have served the American people through an unprecedented pandemic and through a period of high inflation and sensationalized politics.”
The postmaster general is the second-highest-paid federal employee. According to public records, in 2024, Dejoy’s reported pay was $341,020.
Openpayrolls reports, “This is 342.2 percent higher than the average pay for federal agency employees and 375.3 percent higher than the national average for government employees.”

The booing of the U.S. National Anthem by some Canadians—whether in response to U.S. tariffs or the perception of Canada as the “51st state”—is, in my view, unbecoming of our nation. It does little to enhance our reputation or honor the generations of Canadians who fought alongside our American neighbors in times of war. While I find President Trump’s approach to diplomacy and his geopolitical stance deeply disheartening, that does not excuse this behavior.
Even with our differences, Canada has fallen short in several key areas, especially regarding investments in enforcement and military readiness—issues that are now coming back to haunt us. Using the national anthem as a protest tool, though emotionally charged, risks deepening our divisions rather than fostering meaningful dialogue. It also undermines the respect due to symbols that represent our shared history and values, even amidst heightened tensions.
The U.S. and Canada share a long history of cooperation and mutual respect. In times of disagreement, our focus should be on diplomacy, dialogue, and understanding—not on escalating negativity. Although concerns about tariffs and the notion of Canada as a “51st state” are legitimate, our government currently appears to be in disarray, lacking clear leadership or a united stance from which to negotiate.
Consider, for instance, the appointment of a “Fentanyl Czar”—a move that reeks of tokenism at best. We have yet to address broader issues such as the implications of the Stinchcombe and Jordan decisions, the need for bail reform, or the unchecked influence of China in our provinces. Without a commitment to investing in our military and strengthening federal enforcement, these concerns will continue to fester.
Our focus, therefore, should be on holding our government accountable. An immediate election is imperative to ensure that a legitimate governing party can lead our negotiations with the U.S. If we are to be taken seriously, we must first have the leadership to back it up.
