Since 1994, Battered Women’s Support Services in Vancouver, Canada, has been envisioning the day when they can expand on their mission by providing housing for women.
About BWSS
In 1979, a determined team of women founded Battered Women’s Support Services.
A feminist voice against violence and oppression, BWSS is a strong, dynamic organization that provides support and advocacy for women who have experienced abuse, as well as community education and training about violence against women.
Part of a global feminist anti-violence movement, our long-term goal is the elimination of all violence against women and girls.
In response to the dire situation faced by women and children during the COVID-19 pandemic, when traditional transition houses were temporarily forced to close their doors, BWSS took decisive action.
They partnered with a local hotelier to operate emergency transitional housing, offering a safe haven for up to 40 women and children fleeing domestic, intimate partner, and sexualized violence, and continued to provide employment, legal advocacy, counselling, crisis intervention, and more.
Now, because of a serious fundraising drive, this May 2024 they are opening 10 second-stage housing units where women and their children can reside while receiving comprehensive wrap-around support services.
And this Fall 2024, they will welcome 10 families into brand-new condos and townhouses!
Time for everyone to have their own sacred space
especially children and moms fleeing violence.
