Happy Saturday, dear friends! The sun is streaming through my window and the house is quiet except for my parrots talking to each other. Soon my girls will wake up and want “eggie sammiches” but for now, we have a space to our selves. So settle in and let’s get to the news.
We will start with a focus on gender equality, which is a champion cause of the Golden Age of Gaia and founder Steven Beckow. We will hop around from there.
Gender Equality Discussion Comes to the United Nations
Last week, Actor Emma Watson, who is a Good Will Ambassador to the United Nations, gave a speech to launch the #HeforShe campaign. She invited men and boys to take up the cause of gender equality. She also encouraged them to claim their freedom from male stereotypes, which hold them back from being their true selves. She called those who love and support women “Inadvertent Feminists” and asked all people to join together to create a more equal world.

The speech created much discussion on social media and prompted an eloquent response from 15 year old Ed Holtam which was published in the Telegraph and went viral on social media. In the letter he spoke, not only for women, but questioned the controls placed on boys and men that inhibit their growth.

Moving on…
Women in war torn countries know first hand that war does not bring peace. Why isn’t anyone listening to them?
In the wake of celebrating the UN International Day of Peace, University of Cincinnati professor Anne Runyan, co-founder of the field of international feminist relations, asks a simple question. Why is the US at war again, and why isn’t anyone listening to the women who live with war daily in their homelands, who say unequivocally that war does not bring peace?

Fifty years later a Warren Commission investigator is still wondering about JFK.
Yesterday I posted a piece asking the US government to release classified documents related to the JFK assassination. Today a member of the investigative team for the Warren Commission who was “Bobby’s spy” during the investigation, goes on record after 50 years to say he believes there was a conspiracy to kill the President.

9/11 Families want answers, but the NYC Mayor doesn’t want them to ask the questions.
A group of families, who were deeply affected by the 9/11 tragedy, want to know why WTC building 7 fell, if it was not hit by a plane. They are asking New Yorkers to vote on the High-Rise Safety Initiative which would investigate the collapse, so safety measures can be developed to prevent future tragedies. The mayor of New York, Bill DiBlasio wants the initiative blocked, and this is the second time NYC government has put up a road block in this situation.

Giant bank means safe and secure?
JPMorgan Chase spends 250 Million dollars a year in cyber security as the largest bank in the US, but that did not stop hackers from gaining access to 76 million consumer and 7 million business accounts. The hackers did not steal money, but harvested high level information. Investigators try to point the finger at Russian-backed Southern European cyber criminals.

For those in their Golden Years, Norway is the place to be!
As the population of the earth grows older, HelpAge International’s Global AgeWatch Index keeps an eye on the economic and social welfare of those over 60. While Australia, Western Europe and North America ranked highly, Norway was the place to be for the over 60 crowd. It’s also one of the most beautiful places on earth!

Light up your life. No batteries needed!
And finally, we leave with a bright spot to go on with our day!
Ann Makosinski, a 15 year old student from Canada was concerned about the use of disposable batteries. She created a flashlight that harvests sustainable energy from the heat of the hand. Her efforts won her a $25,000 scholarship in the Google Science Fair competition where young people think about how their skills can create products to change the world! Congratulations to Ann and all the other winners. These kids inspire me!
