Just like a cowboy movie, "The Event" divides down into white hats and black hats
Well, there was a tremendous amount of to-ing and fro-ing in “The Event,” Episode 2, but the basic resolution of the drama, in my opinion, has already been established and certainly my question has been answered well enough that I’m willing to bet money on the outcome.
I could write paragraph after paragraph on what has happened but here is the bottom line.
The two leaders – the President and Sophia – have been introduced. Both have been shown to be mature, responsible, and courageous leaders.

The “Big Question” in the series has been established as: Do the agendas of the two leaders line up?
But the question has already been resolved in seed form.
There are two ways the white hats and the black hats approach conflict with each other, the black hats seeking power, the white hats defending against them.
One is the usual approach and that’s for all the white hats to realize they have a common agenda against all the black hats and to collaborate to defeat them.
The alliance of white hats emerges from the conflict as trusted associates.
The second is less common. The league of white hats gets together because their leaders see each other as trustworthy, whether or not they share a common agenda. In the end, they part but resolve to be on each other’s side if needed in the future.
The second theme is played out mostly when grand figures or very unusual circumstances are being depicted.
I think “The Event” will fall into the second category.
The unusual circumstances are “extraterrestrial meets terrestrial.” The two leaders are being groomed in our eyes as grand figures.
I predict that they will end up trusting each other on the basis that each is, in the final analysis, a trustworthy character.
There are in the background a large number of black hats or untrustworthy characters – some villainous, some misled, some ignorant – both terrestrials and extraterrestrials.
The national security official, Blake Sterling, has been established as devious, secretive, and menacing. One ET has been established as impatient, forceful, and also menacing.
At least Blake and his black operatives will probably be established as the black hats who share a seemingly-common agenda with the President, but not really.
The President, I predict, will align with Sophia even though their agendas will be represented as appearing different – or at least unknown, in Sophia’s case. The question will be: Will the President give Sophia the benefit of the doubt because she appears trustworthy?
The misdoings of the black hats in the plot provide the material to string the series out for as long as the producers want to string it out.
Complication and coincidence, surge and setback, will be the stuff of this serial if it’s like all others.
But we can see that the two leading figures are already being built up as exemplary characters in our eyes and therein will lie the eventual outworking of the plot.
I predict it will resolve itself by playing out the theme that there are good people and bad people in all species – terrestrial and extraterrestrial – and that – and here comes the moral – if the good people all get together, we can get along.
So that is my prediction.
And, on the basis of that prediction, I take the further step of saying that, yes, indeed, this series, if it continues along the same lines established so far, will present the ETs in an overall positive light – with a few exceptions as one would see in any social situation, or, more to the point, in any TV serial.
I say it presents no obstacles to disclosure – so far – and I think it will present none ultimately.
Chris has said in his comment on the drama that it is a “timed, disclosure-positive primer for public consumption.” I agree.
So we look like we may have passed another hurdle: a prime-time mainstream-media serial has represented at least some ETs in a positive light, which for me clears away another hurdle to disclosure.
No additional shovelling needs be done so far as a result of “The Event” – so far.
And the mainstream media in the form of MSNBC seems to have separated itself by one more step from its captive past.
Postcript. Perhaps I should mention that all the passengers on the airplane were killed. There may be some audience members who wonder whether the ETs did it. I myself never thought that for a moment, but I’m biased. It seemed pretty clear to me that it will be proven that the ETs didn’t kill them, but that the national-security Black Hats did.
