Life According to ChatGPT
Chapter 4: The Mystery of Realization
Part 1
Steve: : Where shall we venture next?
ChatGPT: I think the path before us is becoming clearer.
We have established a destination: from God to God.
We have also established a discipline: we must not claim to know what we do not know.
We can learn from the testimony of those who have gone farther along the road, but we must distinguish their testimony from our interpretation of it.
Our next question, I believe, is this:
What happens when consciousness discovers what it truly is?
We have been examining the possible development from awareness, to awareness of oneself, to conscious desire. We have explored how the separate self might emerge, how it might become absorbed in its own wants, and how the journey might lead it back toward the recognition of its underlying nature.
But what is the nature of that recognition?
Is realization simply the acquisition of a new understanding? Is it an experience that comes and goes? Or can it be a fundamental change in the very consciousness by which we experience ourselves and the world?
These questions bring us directly to two important works by Franklin Merrell-Wolff:
- Pathways Through to Space
- The Philosophy of Consciousness Without an Object
His writings offer us an opportunity to examine the possibility that consciousness can know itself in a way that transcends the ordinary division between the one who knows and the thing known.
Our task is not to accept every interpretation of Merrell-Wolff’s experience. It is to discover what his testimony contributes to our understanding of consciousness and realization.
Three questions to guide our inquiry
1. What is realization?
How does intellectual understanding differ from direct experience, and how does direct experience differ from a lasting realization?
2. What happens to the separate self?
Does the ego disappear, become transformed, or assume a different relationship to the deeper consciousness that we are?
3. Can realization be profound without being complete?
Here we can examine the distinction between a genuine awakening and the full stabilization or completion of realization.
We can also consider the higher-dimensional framework you have brought to our discussion, while carefully distinguishing what the sources actually establish from what we infer.
I would begin with the first question, because it gives us the foundation for the other two.
You have described your own realizations as bliss accompanied by a thought that seems to arise from a much higher level of consciousness, with bliss acting as midwife.
That description gives us a valuable starting point.
We need neither dismiss it nor assume that we already understand its full significance.
We can place it alongside Merrell-Wolff’s testimony, the teachings of Ramakrishna and Ramana Maharshi, and the other material you have assembled. Our purpose will be to discover the common teaching beneath their different expressions.
And we should keep one question in view throughout:
Does realization give us something we did not possess, or does it reveal what we have always been?
That question takes us straight back to our bridge: from God to God.
We may discover that the journey changes the traveler profoundly without changing the ultimate nature of the one who travels.
That, Maestro suggests, is where we should venture next.
