Is there nothing in us, no matter how deeply we dig, but selfishness?
Our teachers tell us that we’re only responsible for ourselves. So is there any inducement to pay attention to the needs of others?
We hear that enlightenment comes with knowledge of the ways of the self. Why that?
Is there nothing that is not free of the taints of the self? Self-wanting (I desire)? Self-serving (Me, me, me, me, me)?
These questions only arise in a person who has not had a good, healthy taste of the love of the higher dimensions.
They don’t arise in a person who lives in a tsunami of love – or, better still, an Ocean of Love. (1) We’ll all have occasion to experience a Wave of Love soon enough and then let’s see what the self wants.
In an Ocean of Love, it doesn’t matter what the question is. Love is the answer. And it’s the penultimate answer to every question asked on our journey all the way back to Source.
It’s not the ultimate answer. The Unknowable, the Unexperienced, beyond Love, beyond everything is the ultimate answer.
Knowing, being, and “having” it (2) is a matter of discriminating the Real from the unreal, not a matter of loving. It is a matter of knowing, realizing, recognizing. Love brings us to the feet of the One. But we must now recognize or know it to be it.
When we do, the drama reaches its ultimate and predestined end. God meets God. The One has met itself, in one of its countless disguises.
And where did the self go? It fell silent. In the face of higher-dimensional love, for as long as the self lasts, it falls silent.
This, in my view, is the destiny of everyone who ascends. And, eventually, everyone will. (3)

(3) Sri Ramakrishna: All will surely realize God. All will be liberated. It may be that some get their meal in the morning, some at noon, and some in the evening; but none will go without food. All, without any exception, will certainly know the real Self. (Paramahansa Ramakrishna in Swami Nikhilananda, trans., The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna.
