At some point as adults we learn a valuable life lesson.
We learn that things rarely ever go as planned.
Time after time we make plans, create step by step formats of how to achieve our goals.
Ideas of how to better our lives by following a well thought out process is how we operate.
This is how we get things done.
And time after time even the most well thought out plan goes awry.
Life gets in the way and suddenly what we thought was going to happen takes a 180 turn and we are headed in a completely different direction.
We have become very adept at scrapping plans and starting over again.
We humans are resilient in that way.
Not all plans get completely changed.
Many times we manage to hang on to the bare bones and keep going with simple adjustments here and there.
Maybe you make it to the goal and things work out just as planned.
Congratulations. That is truly a pheromonal event.
It probably didn’t go exactly as planned but you got there and that’s the important part.
Let’s look at how we get to our goal.
Do we make a plan and then sit back ?
Do we expect it to happen just because we said this is what we wanted?
Of course not. We have to actively engage with the plan in order to bring it into fruition.
As the saying goes 10% inspiration 90% perspiration.
That’s how we get things done.
The two main ingredients of a plan are in first creating the plan and then following through by implementing the plan.
A well thought out plan takes into account any problems that may arise along the way.
Those problems would have to be foreseeable issues in order to make it into the plan.
The biggest problem of all is dealing with situations that were not seen coming. Things that were not in the plan.
Unknown things happen as a matter of course.
And that is the beginning of every day.
Nobody knows exactly what is going to happen from one moment to the next.
We can only keep an idea, make adjustments and get back on course.
Success is found in the third ingredient.
A binding agent is what keeps the plan together.
This agent must have the ability to make adjustments along the way.
Without the binding agent we have a plan without action or we have action without a plan.
On their own, neither one gets anything done.
The binding agent must also know the plan in order to make those adjustments.
This is typically a foreman’s job or a good community of cooperative action.
In order for a group to move forward together everyone must know the goal.
They must know the plan of action.
And they must be flexible as problems arise and solutions are found.
A really good plan has a space for problem solving and solution to resolution abilities.
Each group or each plan may have varying degrees of receptivity.
This receptivity is part of the binding agent.
No matter how it is implemented it must be done in a manner that is congruent with the whole or new problems will arise.
The larger the project or idea and the more people it includes to greater the issues that may arise but also the greater the opportunity for solutions to be found.
It follows that effective implementation must include all parts of the whole in order to keep moving in the same direction.
Unless of course you are trying to move large masses in a general direction.
The analogy here is it’s like herding cats.
Everyone knows that cats have minds of their own. Trying to herd them is very difficult as they all want to go according to their own idea.
The trick in moving large masses and cats is to give them all the same idea. Do this well enough and they will move in the direction of the idea.
For cats it may be as simple as putting out a can of tuna.
As People, well, we most certainly all have different ideas on how to achieve something.
The bigger the crowd the bigger the need for adjustments.
It may be as easy as continually reminding us what the plan is.
As we forget, wander or lose sight of the goal, we may just need a little nudge.
But if we start to see things differently, many more adjustments will need to be made along the way.
The best one can hope for may be to get a majority moving the desired direction and let the rest catch up if they want to.
At some point if people are left behind they will make the choice to catch up with the group.
Or they will go their own way.
However the idea is presented, it is by choice to get the right people on board.
Success is in the binding agent and it is the binding agent’s job to secure any action to The Idea.
How can we help?
That is the question at every community gathering everywhere everyday.
Give the people a job and you get a group moving towards the same goal with all the right stuff.
Happiness, joy, eagerness and devotion.
These are all binding agents.
Some will fall in step blindly.
Some will say I am waiting for the plan to happen.
Some will do nothing until they are told what to do.
Some will sleep until they are forced to wake up.
That’s their choice.
But most want to know that what they are doing is important.
We want good leadership or we want to do it ourselves.
We want a voice and we want to be heard.
We have good ideas and we have good hearts.
We want to be informed and understand that we are sharing the same goal.
We want to be part of a plan that betters our lives.
We want to know that what we are doing matters.
We want to be part of the solution. Resting on our laurels is not our way.
We want to be able to do something that contributes and makes a difference in the outcome.
We are willing to make adjustments because in the bigger picture, we have learned how life throws curve balls.
We are the people and we want to be the reason for our own success.
Not to follow blindly but to be a part in our lives as our choice.
Being a part of the plan, in action, with joy and inspiration is how we do this together.
We are the binding agents that are the success to any plan.
We are the 10%. We are the 90%.
You want to trust the plan?
Then trust in yourself.
You are the plan.
And this is turning out to be a phenomenal event!
