Mark Laita, “Soft White Underbelly”
Mark Laita is a photographer and creator of the YouTube channel, “Soft White Underbelly.” His work focuses on documenting the human condition, capturing intimate, unvarnished video interviews, and black-and-white portraits of marginalized people.
He says he hopes to help change the human cycle of lack of self-worth by bringing the light to these situations. Mark is gentle. People trust him with their innermost thoughts and feelings. He holds space, he listens.
In the words of the Buddha, when he explained wisdom to us through Linda Dillon, channel for the Council of Love, Mark emulates, “That reverence for life . . . All Existence”:
I wish you to think or comprehend respect is reverence, and it is that fervent regard within all of your being, anchored within your heart, and your heart consciousness.
It is that reverence for life and when I use the word, life, I mean All Existence, from the ant to the beetle to the elephant to your star brothers and sisters, and to your sacred self.
Mark—just like the Buddha asks us to do—is holding space for people to remember Who They Truly Are:
Do you hold yourself in the reverence that we hold you in? Do you hold yourself with the deepest regard that is possible? Or are you dismissive of Who You Are?
Wisdom is the knowing of the Divine Plan and of the unfoldment of that Plan and the rightness of unfoldment, but you cannot even commence to have this sense of wisdom if you do not have this reverence and regard for your sacred being, for the truth of Who You Are.

The Project: Laita launched the Soft White Underbelly channel in 2016 to give a voice to individuals rarely seen in mainstream media.
The Format: Operating mostly from his studio on Skid Row in Los Angeles, he interviews people from all walks of life—particularly those struggling with addiction, poverty, sex work, and mental health.
Impact: The channel gained massive traction for its raw, unfiltered look into the struggles of everyday people, often exploring themes like childhood trauma and the fragility of human life.
Complex Dynamics: Because many of his subjects are highly vulnerable, Laita’s documentary style and his financial compensation to interviewees occasionally spark debate.
Public Perception: While some viewers praise him for humanizing individuals dealing with harsh circumstances, others critique the power dynamics and the ethics surrounding his involvement in his subjects’ lives.
