I’ve made a lot of shoddy choices over the last few months. This is not debatable, just facts. I say this because it was not based on the results of decisions made with a clear mind and best intentions. What I’m talking about are choices I’ve made, which I knew at the time I committed to them, were not the best choices. These are choices I made out of fear, laziness, compulsion, or comfort.
In a recent medicine journey, Spirit showed me this quite clearly. There has been an impostor sitting in the throne of my Self.
In the journey, the whisper of Spirit said something that brings me to tears as I write it:
“Take good care of Aubrey until he comes home.”
Fuck. That one landed deep. It was the kind of tough love that only the medicine has the audacity and clarity to offer.
In the inner kingdom of your being, there is a seat of power and authority that governs your actions, decisions, and ultimately, your destiny. It is a throne, because it is meant to be occupied by your sovereign Self, the regal aspect of you that is aligned with your highest Potential.
However, if vigilance wanes, this throne can be usurped by an impostor. In the most mild cases, this seat can be occupied by your small self. The part of you that is focused on short term instant gratification, at the cost of the story that only you can write. In the most severe instances, you are being acted on and through by the insidious force I have coined Anti-You, which makes choices that derail you from your highest path and hinder your growth.
This impostor, masquerading as your Self, is adept at manipulation. It thrives on fear, doubt, and insecurity, whispering seductive misdirections that lead you away from your authentic purpose. It seeks comfort, and thrives on sloth–the path of least resistance. When this impostor takes control, decisions are made not from a place of wisdom and clarity, but from a place of…smallness.
As Paddy the Baddy said on Saturday night, the impostor is a ‘little grass’ – which apparently, if you come from Liverpool, means you are a ‘one incher.’ It reminds me of the Disney Robin Hood, where Prince John was wearing King Richard’s crown, and it never quite fit. And of course, as with any proper usurper, there was a little serpent hissing in his ear.
The danger of allowing this impostor to reign is that it operates under the guise of familiarity. Its voice sounds like your own, its choices always have some form of justification, yet it leads you further from your sovereign story. This is why awareness and discernment are crucial. By recognizing the impostor’s influence, you can reclaim the throne and realign with your sovereign Self.
What is this Potential that the Sovereign Self is meant to serve?
Your Potential is the highest expression of who you can be, moment to moment. It is the unique combination of your talents, passions, and purpose, and it is constantly evolving and adapting to your circumstances. It is the rabbit that leads the greyhound of your avatar toward the full realization of your gifts and abilities in service to yourself and the world.
Your Potential is the guiding light, the compass that points towards growth, fulfillment, and contribution. It is the embodiment of your highest values, dreams, and aspirations. When aligned with your Potential, your actions are infused with meaning, your decisions are made with integrity, and your life reflects a deep sense of purpose.
Living in alignment with your Potential requires courage, discipline, and a commitment to self-awareness. It involves making choices that may not always be easy or comfortable, but that are true to your core values and vision. It means facing fears, overcoming obstacles, and continually striving to evolve into the best version of yourself.
By keeping the throne of your Self occupied by your sovereign essence, you ensure that your life is guided by the wisdom of your Potential, rather than the whims of an impostor.
As for me, this realization was an important and necessary step for the homecoming of Aubrey. And there is no time to waste. I’m not going to let the impostor inseminate my wife, and I love myself and the world too much to allow him any more time with his ass in my chair.
Much love,
~ Aub
