I’m not being dramatic when I say that love saves my life every day. I would cliff dive with no ‘chute out of this dimension, for all of its shits and giggles, if I didn’t know love here. Lower case, upper case, it doesn’t even matter, any of the seven different fractals of love that I describe in my poetry book.
Love that is a state of being, a frequency you tune into, or as my teacher Marc Gafni puts it, “Love as a perception; not an emotion.” When you perceive love, and realize your participation in the Field of that Love… when you truly know in your bones that you are loved, it changes everything. And it will save your life too.
The trouble is, most of us walk around with an inner asshole constantly whispering (or shouting) that we’re not worthy of it. That inner critic, that basketball Coach from hell (I had one of those), the voice of Anti-You, tells us we haven’t earned it, that we’re fundamentally flawed, that love is conditional.
So, even when love is right there, offered freely, we turn our backs, unable to receive it because we don’t believe we deserve it.
And seriously, if you can’t feel love, if you can’t let it in, what’s the point in living? You can grind, you can hustle, you can chase power – that great, glittering imitation of love – but it will always leave you empty. Power demands more power; it’s a hungry ghost that’s never satisfied. It can build empires, but it can’t build a life worth living. Only love can do that.
This is where, for many, the figure of Jesus becomes so potent. Regardless of dogma, Jesus stands as the most powerful archetype of unconditional love.
The story is simple: no matter what you’ve done, no matter how far you’ve fallen, Jesus loves you. That energy, that unwavering perception of your inherent worthiness, has undeniably saved countless lives.
Right now from his heavenly crib in the Celestial Dimension, that frequency of love can be felt if you open yourself to it. I have a handful of times, and it’s incredible. Much to the chagrin of many Christians, however, I love Jesus with absolute fullness of heart, but I’m still not a Christian.
Perhaps I haven’t quite gotten over the sins of the Church and the great, tragic irony that more suffering has been inflicted in the name of this Ultimate Lover than perhaps any other figure. Dungeons, torture, burnings – horrors committed invoking His name. But let’s be clear: that wasn’t Jesus. That was the Deceiver, the Father of Lies, one of the fiercest faces of the universal Anti-You twisting the most sacred energy for its own dark agenda.
Jesus had nothing to do with that hate.
Even still, maybe Jesus isn’t your access point. That’s all good. The crucial thing is finding something or someone that reflects that unconditional love back to you.
It might be your dog, who looks at you like you’re the greatest being in the universe even when you feel like a feces species.
It might be a mentor, a friend, a child. Find that source. And just as importantly, be that source for others. There’s enough hate and judgment swirling around; don’t add your marbles to that mountain. Your willingness to see the best in someone, to offer love without condition, might just be their “Own Personal Jesus,” as the Depeche Mode lyric goes.
Even with all the love in my life, the Deceiver still gets his licks in, forking me up royally. He whispers that people only love me for what I provide, for what they can get. It’s a lie, but lies are the Opponent’s specialty.
This past Sunday, I went to see my Mom. And when she walked me to my car, I had this profound realization: not even the most insidious voice of Anti-You could convince me that my mother wants anything other than my happiness. That’s it. Her love isn’t transactional; it just is. No matter how bad I fall, even if I’m not happy, her love remains. Unconditional. And she’s not even the only person who loves me like that! I’ve got a whole ride-or-die rosary of ‘Ohana who love me in this way.
It’s so easy to overlook these profound blessings right in front of us. Take a moment today. Feel into the love that is there, whether it’s from a person, a pet, or the Force itself. Metabolize it. Let it fill your lungs like the air you breathe. Let it save you, moment by moment, day by day.
I love you all, as best I can, for real.
