Why do we give gifts at Christmas time? My hunch is that in the old days when people drove sleighs it was customary to come with a gift in one’s hand when visiting friends and family.
Bearing an offering to a person who is about to feed you makes sense.
But behind gift-giving is a greater truth: That giving of oneself and one’s substance calls up love from the heart. A gift that’s poorly given – that is, not given from the heart – is detected and responded to in kind. We say, “he didn’t really mean it” or “she’s just going through the motions.” We know.
But giving because one enjoys giving and giving because one wants to express love provide their own reward to the giver: Feeling that love as it passes through us and flows to the giftee.
That’s why the Divine Mother has required us here at GAoG to seek our sustenance and shelter from you. She could have attracted a benefactor or team of benefactors. Michael can add a few zeroes to our bank accounts. (1) But no, they want us to allow ourselves to be the objects of giving.
I grew up being wary of gifts. My dad always made them conditional. I concluded that I don’t need anyone. Etc.
So I too have been growing in being vulnerable and opening myself to receiving.
I’m sorry. I wax philosophical at Christmastime.
I could almost end here and forget to make our appeal to you. We’re halfway to making our monthly costs. I know everyone has Christmas expenses and New Year’s to get through as well.
But if you do have disposable income left over at this time of year, please do go on over to the Hope Chest and help us with a one-time or monthly donation, in what I hope is the last month before financial relief and release. (But how many times have we thought that?)
A shout out to all the people who have written in saying they were at the 2012 Conference in Sedona and all the other conferences that took place during those pre- and post-2012 years. A shout-out to all loyal readers.
I’m an introvert and not very much involved in family, not as much as most people are. You are my family. My work is my life.
I love you all.
