I would like to nominate ‘waiting’ as a new virtue.
Oh man, is it hard to wait sometimes.
Especially when one does not know exactly what they are waiting for.
Waiting can also be a programmed response.
When going into a room or store full of people it is appropriate to wait your turn.
When living in a city or highly populated area one often finds themselves standing in line. We chastise those that don’t follow the rule. Stick to the program.
Some places require taking a number. I like that idea because it tells you some sort of order of things and lends the idea that you will actually get a turn.
We listen for the clues or the call that our turn is next.
Like runners in the starting block we get ourselves ready for the shotgun start and sprint off to a finish line.
Waiting on a target date to begin something is a social way to gather people all in the same place or to be at a predetermined place in time.
We use an advent calendar to calm ourselves with chocolate a month before Christmas.
Everyday we open the cardboard door and get a reward for our patience.
Christmas, the ultimate lesson in learning how to wait.
Looking at packages under the tree, walking by them everyday trying to encourage the dog to just tear a corner so one can at least get a peek.
Opening Christmas presents may be one of the telltale signs of what kind of person you are.
Do you rip and tear the ribbons and paper?
Or do you carefully remove and unfold and refold the paper for reuse again next year?
Are you chomping at the bit right now wondering if I will ever reach my point?
Maybe you already know where I am heading and are racing ahead because you’re tired of waiting.
The virtue of waiting is Patience.
And frankly, the times we are in have put this virtue to task.
How much longer do we have to wait in order to see some results?
Have we heard the shotgun and are we racing toward a goal?
Did we know beforehand how much distance there was to cover?
That part is important because a good runner knows to pace themselves accordingly.
But as I mentioned at the beginning we don’t know exactly what we are racing towards.
And so we wait. And we wait some more.
A lot of things are happening while we wait.
Hopefully you are doing the work. Spiritual and physical maintenance is a regular practice.
Preparing the vessel, the home, the business to be able to receive incoming energies is a full time job.
In a way this isn’t waiting.
It is preparing and that is immensely important.
But it is grueling to wait for others to do something that seems to be immensely important.
And this is where our patience is tested.
I am tested daily by wanting others to come around to my point of view.
My perspective has value as does everyone’s.
In this holding pattern I have shown patience. I have given grace.
I have gently nudged with bits of information.
Not to overwhelm or create fear but to educate and improve knowledge and understanding.
What some of us know is not easy information. We know that part too.
But it is a way toward the goal, the finish line, the package at Christmas.
And yet there are many that don’t want to know.
This can wear my patience. This is a test.
If they are not coming, Why do we wait?
How long does one stand in line before changing plans and walking out the door?
Do you do that when they have called the number just before yours?
Do you do that mid sprint after the shotgun start?
Do you commit to the wait or throw your hands up and leave?
It’s been at least 4 years of standing in line.
Maybe it has been my whole life.
The finish line is in sight.
Christmas isn’t about opening packages. Although that is a fun thing to do.
This isn’t about how long it takes to stand in line.
Is it that my whole life is to be fulfilled?
How many lifetimes have I stood in line?
Here I stand but a bit longer.
My patience has been tested and I am still waiting.
A smile grows bigger and bigger from my heart down to my toes and back up again.
My shoulder blades tingle on my upper back.
Something is about to unfold.
If waiting is a virtue, I nailed it.
It must be close by now.
Where is the advent calendar?
I need chocolate.
I feel that whatever I have been waiting for, it’s about to arrive.
