I wasn’t sure about that last one, until I thought of my Dad. His time in the Naval Construction Battalion during WWII may actually have qualified for the best time of his life. Not necessarily because there was danger and he got to be awesome. It absolutely was about brotherhood. It was about getting a job done as a team under circumstances that stirred the patriotic souls of every guy there. He brought our whole family to year after year of SeaBee reunions all across the country, and he kept going to those gatherings long after we all grew up and lost interest.
There’s something about being part of a cause far larger than oneself, and within a group of guys who literally are depending on one another to play their parts well and efficiently. I’m pretty sure that experience touched a part of my Dad’s soul never to be reached again, even by his children. He definitely was a
