Statement from the Canadian Freedom Convoy Organizers Regarding GoFundMe and Finances: “We’re OK.”

GoFundMe has announced that it will not be releasing over $9 million dollars in donations to the trucker Freedom Convoy 2022 organizers.
The online funding platform posted the announcement on Friday on the Freedom Convoy’s fundraising webpage.
In its reasons for cancelling the fundraiser and withholding the money, GoFundMe stated that it “now has evidence that the previously peaceful demonstration has become an occupation, with police reports of violence and other unlawful activity.”
“To ensure GoFundMe remains a trusted platform, we work with local authorities to ensure we have a detailed, factual understanding of events taking place on the ground. Following a review of relevant facts and multiple discussions with local law enforcement and city officials, this fundraiser is now in violation of our Terms of Service (Term 8, which prohibits the promotion of violence and harassment) and has been removed from the platform.”
The platform goes on to say that while it had “released” an initial $1 million, “no further funds will be directly distributed to the Freedom Convoy organizers – we will work with organizers to send all remaining funds to credible and established charities verified by GoFundMe.”
“All donors may submit a request for a full refund until February 19th, 2022 using this dedicated refund form.”
The platform had originally suspended the convoy’s fundraiser pending a review.
Freedom Convoy organizers had spoken to media about the suspension Thursday.
Co-organizer Tamara Lich said accountants and lawyers working for the convoy had been communicating with GoFundMe and that she had hoped they would be lifting the account’s suspension soon.
Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms lawyer Keith Wilson appeared alongside Lich, saying that most of the money was being held by GoFundMe because they were “bombarded with an orchestrated social media campaign to try and shut it down.” He said that all of the legal and accounting requirements have been met.
“Once we reach the point where GoFundMe has released the funds, the corporate lawyer experts on the team as well as the accountants are currently refining the process for truckers and others who have been involved with the convoy to be reimbursed,” said Wilson.
Wilson gave a brief statement on Friday.
“Over the past year, the federal government in Canada under Prime Minister Trudeau has taken away Canadians’ Charter rights, constitutional rights, to travel freely, has taken away truckers’ rights to travel, their mobility rights, their ability to make a living under the Constitution for those who’ve chosen to be unvaccinated,” Wilson said.
“This afternoon, the chief of city police for Ottawa made announcements that are disturbing and should trouble Canadians and those around the world who support this trucker protest for freedom. The police chief essentially announced an assault on the protesters. He announced that very specific measures that we normally only see instituted by oppressive regimes around the world would be initiated.”
“He effectively announced that he is going to be taking away Canadians’ Charter rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.”
“We are being censored,” said Wilson. “Please get this out to the world.”
Earlier in the day, Ottawa Police chief Peter Sloly gave a press conference and issued a statement, referring to the protest repeatedly as “unlawful” and saying, “(o)ur goal is to end the demonstration.”
“We have increased ability to identify and target protesters and supporters of protesters who are funding and enabling unlawful and harmful activity by the protesters themselves,” Sloly said. “Investigative evidence gathering teams are collecting financial, digital, vehicle registration, driver identification, insurance status and other related evidence that will be used in prosecutions.”
“Every unlawful act including traffic and insurance violations will be fully pursued, regardless of the origin at any time in the future. The primary focus of each of these measures will be on the unlawful behaviour connected to the ongoing demonstrations, this includes parallel and counter demonstrations. We strongly urge all demonstrators and those engaging with the demonstrators to act lawfully, peacefully and respectfully.”
“The hatred, the violence, the illegal acts that Ottawa residences and businesses have endured over the last week is unacceptable in any circumstance,” Sloly said. “The Ottawa Police Service and the City of Ottawa are bringing significantly greater resources to restore order, hold offenders to account and protect our neighbourhoods.”
“The current demonstration in the parliamentary precinct red zone remains unresolved despite significant successes in reducing the number of trucks, and demonstrators while preventing riots, injuries or deaths. We take no solace in these operational successes to date.”
“Our goal is to end the demonstration,” Sloly concluded. “The demonstrators in the red zone area remain highly organized, well-funded, extremely committed to resisting all attempts to end the demonstration safely. This remains as it was from the beginning an increasingly volatile and increasingly dangerous demonstration.”

Like millions of Canadian workers across the country, truckers are being required by Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government to get the experimental Covid-19 vaccine, or face a 14-day quarantine period if and when they cross the border into the United States to make their deliveries.
These truckers were categorized as “essential workers” (which they most certainly are) during the worst days of the Covid crisis, when lockdowns were the universal norm and millions of people were forced out of their jobs and offices. Even so, they remained on the job through it all, ensuring that essentials were available to people in every corner of the country, even when some businesses were shut down and strict rules were in place that made something as simple as grocery shopping a challenge for millions.
In fact, Prime Minister Trudeau went out of his way to compliment these men and women back in March of 2020, tweeting the following:
While many of us are working from home, there are others who aren’t able to do that – like the truck drivers who are working day and night to make sure our shelves are stocked. So when you can, please #ThankATrucker for everything they’re doing and help them however you can.
In fact, But just yesterday, Trudeau went on the record at a press conference labeling these truckers everything from “racists” to “Nazis” in a simply stunning reversal from his earlier comments.
So why the sudden change in attitude from the Prime Minister?
Because, as it turns out, these truckers are refusing to sit idly by while their rights — and the rights of millions of working Canadians — remain under attack like never before, and they are standing up to Trudeau and challenging his government’s radical medical tyranny head-on.
With their livelihoods on the line, these truckers decided it was time to take action.
This past weekend, the #FreedomConvoy led a 50-mile-long caravan of what’s estimated to be thousands of truckers from across Canada to Parliament Hill in Ottawa, where they staged a monumental demonstration to protest Trudeau’s vaccination mandate.
In addition, truckers from across the United States (who are similarly fighting to preserve their own medical freedoms against a power-hungry federal government) also joined the Freedom Convoy to stand in solidarity with their neighbors to the north.

The grassroots are clearly on their side (and the side of freedom), but even so, Trudeau remains unmoved…
He has dismissed the truckers and their supporters as a “small fringe,” and has even accused the organizers of the Freedom Convoy and its participants of holding “unacceptable views.”
But Justin Trudeau is wrong: These hardworking men and women are not racists or Nazis, and they are certainly not a fringe group — they are patriotic, freedom-loving Canadians who refuse to stand down when being faced with egregious medical tyranny on the federal government’s part, and who are using their constitutional right(s) to freedom of speech and expression to be a unified voice for millions of others faced with similar medical mandates.
And they need our support.

Civil liberties charity concerned about police threats to kettle peaceful protesters in Ottawa

The Democracy Fund (TDF), a registered Canadian charity with a focus on civil liberties advancement and education, is cautioning Ottawa police that any abusive activity directed at peaceful Freedom Convoy protesters in the city since last Friday would end up before the courts.
A press release from TDF Friday afternoon detailed why the charity is concerned about the potential for a police escalation to violence this weekend after the second wave of truckers and allies are set to descend on the nation’s capital.
The protesters are joining an earlier truck convoy of thousands of Canadians which arrived late last week as part of a Canada-wide movement against coronavirus restrictions and vaccine passports.
“In a 22-part series of tweets this morning, Ottawa Police announced a G20-style “surge” strategy to physically confront and kettle peaceful protesters, contrary to standard police practice of de-escalation. Ottawa Police also levelled politically charged accusations at protesters, including that they are violent and dangerous: police statistics show this is not the case.
More troubling yet, is the police threat to use Canada’s spy agencies to track personal details of peaceful protesters, including the collection of banking, insurance, and other personal information. This is tantamount to “doxing” and would amount to the creation of a political enemies list.”
In the release, TDF promises to take immediate legal action to protect the rights of protesters by deploying lawyers to Ottawa and advises peaceful protesters in need of urgent legal advice related to the protest activities to contact www.TruckerLaw.ca.
