In a recent article on Universal Basic Incomes, the author wrote:
“All that said, Republicans—led by a majority leader who thought allowing states to propose bankruptcy was a smart idea—control the Senate currently, and are unlikely to vote favorably on any social welfare program. If and when this bill dies on the Senate floor, you’ll know who to blame.” (1)
This pessimism, if it were widespread, would seem to indicate that this idea’s time has not yet come. But I’m convinced that it has and that we are right on the knife edge.
There will still have to be such a groundswell of approval for it that no politician would resist the “tide in the affairs of men, which, taken at its tide, leads on to victory.”
For that to happen, one of three things would need to occur beforehand: (1) things have to get so bad that people ask for it right away; (2) the Reval occurs and lightworkers put UBI programs in place, right away; or (3) we who support the idea build momentum now.
The support for it would have to reach a certain level along several axes of value.
People would have to see its relevance to them. They’d have to see its value for them. They’d have to agree with the gamble that the world after UBI would be a better rather than a worse place to live. They’d have to be willing to risk it and to tweak the process later to get it right.
Their vote would have to switch from a “no” to a “yes” on UBIs.
Momentum is building in the world. I think you can see that in the variety of stories being posted on the subject.
People range from mild interest to enthusiasm. There are no more shouts of “socialist”! Now, that’d seem to be in bad taste, given how many people are suffering.
That lull in the meme war is another reason why this is the time to build momentum for a universal basic income of $2,000 a month (or local equivalent). [The amount is my suggestion.]
I don’t tweet but I’ll offer the hashtag #ubi.
With a global UBI (yes, yes, GESARA) in place, in one go, we’d have taken a giant step towards eliminating need in the world. It never had to happen. I’ve already described the mindset that justifies leaving some people in need and want while others live in luxury. (2)
We need to recognize that there is no need for want and poverty in our world and take this step to eliminate it.
