‘Everywhere you go is just devastation’: The southern NSW bushfires
On RN Breakfast with Fran Kelly, ABC.com.au, Jan. 29, 2020
“It felt like Armageddon…”
“Fire falling out of the sky…”
“This is what hell looks like.”
RN Breakfast broadcasts live from Bega on the South Coast of NSW, an area that suffered terrible losses when fast-moving and ferocious bushfires broke out on New Year’s Eve, sweeping through small towns and leaving lives lost and communities devastated in its wake.
10 people dead in this coastal region alone, hundreds of properties destroyed, millions of hectares of forests, bush and farmland wiped out and wildlife lost on an immense scale.
Over the next few days we’ll visit some of those communities in the Bega and Eurobodalla shires and talk to the locals — the farmers, the doctors, community leaders and the businesses — about how they’re coping with life under fire threat.

As bushfires continue to burn across Australia, you might be wondering how you can help. Here’s a guide to just a few ways that you can support those on the frontline and in need.
NSW RFS
Keen to support the volunteers on the frontline? You can donate to your local Rural Fire Service by contacting your local brigade directly or heading here.
You can also donate to the families of the two volunteer firefighters who were killed during the Green Wattle Creek fire. Geoffrey Keaton (32 years old) and Andrew O’Dwyer (36) leave behind young children. You can find more information here.
Salvation Army
The Salvos have launched a Disaster Appeal to support communities affected by the devastating bushfires in New South Wales and Queensland.
They’re hoping to raise $3 million in the appeal.
To donate to The Salvation Army Disaster Appeal, go to salvationarmy.org.au, call 13 SALVOS (13 72 58) or donate at any Woolworths checkout.
The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital
There’s fears that over 300 koalas have perished in the Port Macquarie region of New South Wales.
The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital is accepting donations to develop and build watering stations for thirsty koalas on their GoFundMe page.
