Dark outside just days past the winter solstice, the sun is two time zones away.
Darkness loves to linger as it takes hold on this part of the world.
Latitude and longitude, all are turning points.
Winter yearns to learn our secrets.
Starting the day requires leaving behind the night.
Waking will take whatever form it needs.
For the ease of mind and the calm of my soul I do not rush things.
Time has little meaning in the transition of eternal existence.
The candle lit up the room in a soft glow that warmed the walls.
An unseen draft flickers the candle light.
No wind. No open doors or windows. No blowing furnace. Just a flicker.
And then another and another, until the flame was dancing to a steady rhythm of a silent drum.
Perhaps it was the arrival of unseen guests.
That’s fine.
They can come sit for a while.
This is the season of tangible giving symbolizing intangible gifts.
This can be a moment of gift exchange. No boxes needed.
Just a visual sign of a shared idea.
What did you bring me today?
What do I have for you?
The flickering stops and the steady glow grows into a tall spire reaching high, illuminating more objects in the room.
The brighter the light the more obvious the shadows.
I don’t mind a little bit of dark as long as I know where I am walking.
Too bright of light too fast and I get just as blinded.
Until natural light arrives, one lumen is enough to see where the next step lies.
One candle reveals a room.
As a torch, candlelight in the middle of the dark burns as a beacon of hope.
During the bright of day it is forgotten and cannot be seen.
At the right place and in the right time a tiny light serves its purpose well.
Another flicker as the candle reads my thoughts.
This brings a smile to my face.
Peace and calm flow over me as the shift from dark to light should.
I take a deep breath and relax.
All is well in this endless moment.
Even as the window begins to glow in daylight.
Change is coming just as surely as another day.
I want to hang on to this moment and never let it end.
Pulling the light into my heart I know we will walk together.
In the light of day or in the dark of night
This flame is eternal.
