Pope Francis Names Far-Left, Anti-Trump Activist as Cardinal in Washington – Will Oppose ‘Unthinkable’ Mass Deportation Efforts

Pope Francis has named a far-left anti-Trump activist as his cardinal in Washington.
In a statement on Monday, Francis announced that Cardinal Robert W. McElroy will serve as the next Roman Catholic archbishop of Washington.
He will replace Cardinal Wilton Gregory, 77, the first African-American to be made a cardinal, a member of the church’s highest governing body that chooses the next pontiff.
McElroy, who is currently a bishop in San Diego, is a notorious political troublemaker who shares the Pope’s left-wing worldview.
According to The New York Times, McElroy is a “longtime supporter of the pope’s pastoral agenda, and is known for regularly speaking out on the inclusion of migrants, women and L.G.B.T.Q. people in the Catholic church and in the United States.”

As bishop of the San Diego diocese, along the border with Mexico, Cardinal McElroy has a history of standing with immigrants, who represent a significant constituency for the Catholic church both globally and in the U.S.

As other Catholic bishops sought to make abortion their pre-eminent issue, Cardinal McElroy often argued that abortion was only one of several critical priorities of Catholic moral teaching.
When conservative bishops targeted President Biden, America’s second Catholic president, with a proposal in 2021 to deny politicians communion because of their support of abortion rights, he pushed back, saying that under such a proposal, the sacrament, “which seeks to make us one, will become for millions of Catholics a sign of division.”
Cardinal McElroy has made a case for the “radical inclusion” of women and L.G.B.T.Q. people in church life and leadership, to the exasperation of conservatives. In 2022, Pope Francis made him a cardinal, and therefore eligible to vote on the pontiff’s successor.
Having previously described Donald Trump’s plan for mass deportations as “unthinkable,” last month McElroy released a statement promising to stand in solidarity with those at risk of being sent back home:
We realize that the calls for mass deportations and raids on undocumented individuals and migrant families have created genuine fear for so many we shepherd in our dioceses.

Biden’s DOJ hunted down MAGA grandmothers and other non-violent offenders and threw them in the DC gulag.
Merrick Garland’s prosecutors may unseal indictments at the last minute to derail Trump’s plans to pardon January 6 defendants.
Revolver News recently floated a scenario in which the Biden DOJ unseals an indictment on the January 6 pipe bomber shortly before Trump’s inauguration to throw a wrench in Trump’s possible blanket pardon of J6ers.
The FBI last Thursday evening released *new* footage of the January 6 pipe bomber after Rep. Loudermilk released a report revealing the bureau engaged in a massive coverup operation.

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry has announced his intention to ask President Joe Biden to declare an emergency in the state of Louisiana to unlock federal assistance that he says is needed to bolster the state’s response to the recent New Orleans truck attack and support enhanced measures to prevent potential future attacks.
On New Year’s Day, 14 people were killed and dozens injured when U.S. Army veteran Shamsud-Din Jabbar rammed a truck into a crowd of revelers. The attacker died in a shootout with police.

Trump Reacts to Trudeau’s Resignation, Says Canada Should ‘Merge’ With US
Trump said that merging with the United States would mean Canada would have no tariffs and its taxes would “go way down.”

Incoming U.S. President Donald Trump has once again called for Canada to become the 51st state following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement that he will resign.
“The United States can no longer suffer the massive trade deficits and subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned,” Trump said on Truth Social on Jan. 6.
Trump also said that many Canadians “love being the 51st state,” and that merging with the United States would mean Canada would have no tariffs, its taxes would “go way down,” and it would be militarily secure from the “threat of the Russian and Chinese ships that are constantly surrounding them.”
Trudeau announced on Jan. 6 that he intended to resign as prime minister once the Liberal Party has chosen a replacement. He also met with Governor General Mary Simon to ask for her to prorogue Parliament, which she accepted, bringing an end to the current parliamentary session until March 24.
The prime minister has been facing calls to step down for several weeks from regional caucuses, as the party suffers from poor polling numbers and several byelection losses. The calls for Trudeau to resign grew louder after former Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned from cabinet on Dec. 16, the same day she was set to introduce the fall economic statement.
Trump has made several references to potentially making Canada the “51st state” since winning the U.S. election in November 2024.
He first made reference to it while Trudeau was visiting Mar-a-Lago on Nov. 29, saying if Canada could not survive without having a trade surplus with the United States, then it should become a state.
Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc, who had attended the dinner as public safety minister at that time, later said the president had made the comments in a joking manner, and that there was “cheerful banter between the prime minister” and Trump.
