Despite how many times you’ve all come through for us when we’ve had to ask for help, it still stuns and amazes us to see the support you’re willing to give.
Thank you so, so much to everyone who has helped us in our time of need (including those of you who sent us love and good vibes).
We received enough contributions that we decided to put my car in the shop to pay for the repairs it would need before paying the property tax bill, which we plan to pay with my check from my part-time job this Friday.
I was writing this appeal to thank all of you and happily announce that we were going to have enough to fix the car and pay the bills. Then, yet another big problem arose.
Originally, we were told by the mechanic we took our car to that it only needed a tune-up and a new speed censor. The total bill would’ve been almost $600, but your contributions ensured we could pay it.
Then, I returned home from work yesterday (Oct. 8th) to a call from the mechanic.
It turns out the car’s transmission has gone bad and will need replaced. The cost for this is a whopping $900.
After paying the shop for the tune-up, which they had already done before they discovered the transmission problem, we’re about $350 short of what we need to pay for a new transmission.
After two big emergencies that forced us to come to you, we have yet another we’re asking for help with.
We haven’t decided whether to try to raise the money to fix the transmission or sell the car and start saving for another.
Since I need to get to my part-time job every day and it will be difficult to find rides until we can save up enough for another car, we’re thinking about fixing the transmission.
Before, we needed around $260 to pay our first property tax bill. Your contributions far exceeded our expectations, which, again, allowed us to focus on fixing my car first. Both property tax bills will be paid either way.
Now, the focus has shifted onto the car so I can get to my part-time job every day.
We need at least $350 to fix the transmission or the car is useless.
That should be all it needs in terms of repairs, but after that, we’re looking at an additional $100-$150 for the registration sticker and around $60-$90 for a month of insurance to get the car fully legal.
If we have to save up for the sticker and insurance, then so be it. Our focus now is to raise enough for the new transmission. If by some miracle we can get the transmission replaced, we’ll be sinking every bit of our money into this car.
I’m currently relying on one person to get back and forth to work. They are letting me borrow their car every day, but it too has had problems and they aren’t willing to keep letting me use it.
Basically, if I can’t get my car going, I won’t be able to keep the part-time job for long.
With my check going to the property tax bill, we’re likely to get behind on our regular bills. We’re not sure what to do; whether we can replace the transmission mostly depends on whether we can raise the money for it.
I feel awful that it has come to this – mainly because this was meant to be our last big appeal, and it has stretched into three big emergencies.
To keep being forced to ask for help when you’ve already given so much is a dreadful feeling. Honestly, I just want these money problems to be over.
Even if nobody can help this time around, which would be very understandable given how much you helped just a week ago, we greatly appreciate all you have done for us.
We certainly didn’t anticipate that the car repairs would be this costly, and we genuinely don’t know what to do.

Update #1:
This is now even more of an emergency than it already was. As I wrote below, we owe $260 toward a property tax bill due this week and I recently took a part-time job to start earning some of the money we need for the bill (while hoping our readers can help us with the rest).
The problem now is that I’ve lost one of my only rides to work. I’m not sure if my other ride will be available every day of the Monday-Friday I’m working.
My car has been broken down for over a year (I’ve had no money to fix it), and I can’t put any money from the part-time job toward fixing it because I need that money to pay the property tax. If I end up without a ride, I’ll risk losing the job.
If, however, we can get contributions that allow us to pay the property tax bill, we’d be that much closer to getting our car fixed so I could get to work.
This has become quite an unexpected emergency. If anyone has anything to contribute, it would help a great deal right now. We are severely in need.
The time has again come to ask our readers to support the blog another month. This appeal is slightly different, however, because this time it’s a little more of an emergency.
Our last few monthly appeals were focused on raising money to pay bills so we could keep our internet and thus keep the blog going. This time, we’re asking for your help with a property tax payment that is due early October.
A property tax is a yearly payment that homeowners must pay to the state to keep from losing their homes. As I wrote earlier this month, if a homeowner is unable to pay the full bill, then their property is open to being purchased by someone else.
If a buyer is willing to take over the taxes that are due, they could buy the property and evict the homeowners.
Usually, our tax refund provides us enough to pay the full property tax bill. But the bill has been getting higher every year, and unfortunately, we only had enough to pay a portion of it.
The rest of it is due in two separate payments at the end of this year – the first being on October 10th, and the second in December. The October bill is $260, and we have a little over a week to come up with the money to pay it on time.
If for some reason we can’t pay both bills, then it wouldn’t be until next year or later that we’d have to worry about losing our home. We don’t want to take the risk regardless, and so we are again asking for your help.
I’ve been anticipating this bill for a while, but I didn’t want to mention it during last month’s appeal because we were focused on getting through that month.
I’ve spent September looking for a part-time job so I could make some extra money to pay this tax bill. I’m happy to report that on September 19th (9/19/19 for my fellow lovers of synchronicity), I started a cleaning job that will supply some of the extra income we’ve needed for a long time.
The hours are perfect, as they give me time to get back home and write/run the blog. If I can balance both jobs, and I’m confident I can, then you can expect more articles in the weeks and months ahead. Hopefully, in the not-to-distant future, you can expect fewer appeals as well.
The main reason I took a part-time job is that we need to pay this first tax bill asap. I also did it because you’ve all helped us countless times, and it doesn’t feel right to continue to depend on our readers to get us through emergencies like this.
It’s one thing to need a little help paying bills each month, and small blogs like mine rely on reader support to survive.
But a property tax is a much bigger deal.
If I can work for some extra money while I continue to write, then I can have some hard-earned money to contribute to these bills instead of putting it all on our readers every time.
In a few months, after the two bills are hopefully paid, I plan to keep the part-time job. My goal is to be as free as possible from the need to make any more appeals. Then, I can focus on making more content as I balance both jobs.
This would be my way of showing gratitude to everyone who’s helped us get through these past few years. Becoming financially independent enough to just write without having so many emergencies would take a lot of pressure off of me and the readers of this blog.
Some people think you should not help someone who appears uninterested in helping themselves (i.e., taking responsibility and fixing their problems). We appreciate all the help you’ve given us more than we could possibly express, and I don’t want to keep asking forever.
Even as we’re forced to ask for help yet again, I want you to know that I’m trying to help myself as opposed to, again, putting it all on our readers.
Writing is my passion, and it’s all I really want to do. Despite this, I have no problem working a side job. I can see when a situation – in this case, financial trouble – has gotten out of hand. At a certain point, I must address the problem and find a solution.
I’m prepared to work and grateful for the opportunity to write, even if a have a few less hours a day to do it. It will be worth the little bit of financial independence the part-time work will give me.
Unfortunately, my first check won’t be enough to cover the entire October property tax bill. Because of this, we’re asking for your help with what is hopefully our last big emergency.
