Canadians to Form Human ‘Freedom Chain’ in Protest of COVID-19 Mandates

The Freedom Chain will spread out across the entirety of the country along the Trans-Canada Highway, which spans 7,476 km, beginning in Victoria, British Columbia, to St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Dozens of private and public Facebook groups, as well as several event notices, have been created for local coordination.
“The chain is intended to promote and highlight Canadian unity and love during these turbulent times by calling for a hand-to-hand human chain from British Columbia to Newfoundland,” said a Freedom Chain group for southern Ontario.
According to a photo shared on Twitter, the Freedom Chain will kick off in Ontario at 1 p.m. EST on Saturday.
This movement comes after the federal government dispersed protesters participating in the “Freedom Convoy 2022” that first began to oppose the federal government’s vaccine mandate imposed on Jan. 15, requiring all truck drivers crossing back into Canada to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 if they want to avoid a 14-day quarantine upon reentry. With large convoys of trucks arriving in Ottawa to stage a peaceful protest, the movement expanded to a national scale, with many joining to oppose other COVID-19 restrictions.
Following weeks of protest, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared a state of emergency on Feb. 14, invoking the Emergencies Act to give the police additional powers to remove the protesters at downtown Ottawa, as well as those who blockaded several Canada-U.S. border crossings in solidarity. The blockades and the protest at the national capital ended after the police enforced the emergency orders.
The federal vaccine mandate imposed on truck drivers remains in place.
The Freedom Chain in Canada is not the world’s first attempt at such means of protest.
On Aug. 23, 1989, roughly 2 million protesters in the Baltic nations of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia joined hands from Tallinn through Riga to Vilnius—spanning 675 km—forming a human chain that is now known as “The Baltic Way” to protest against communism and the rule of the Soviet Union.
Commemorating the 30th anniversary of the event, the people of Hong Kong held a similar demonstration on Aug. 23, 2019, protesting the Chinese Communist Party’s tightening control over the former British colony.

Thousands of Canadians from coast to coast are expected to join hands this coming Saturday on the side of Canada’s main highway to demand an end to federal COVID mandates in a human Freedom Chain.
The Canada-wide “Freedom Chain 2022” will stretch the entire length of Canada’s Trans-Canada highway, which is some 7,476 kilometers (4,645 miles) long. It will start out west in Victoria, British Columbia, and end in St. John’s Newfoundland. The chain is set to begin at 1 p.m. EST in all locations.
The group’s Facebook page, which was launched in February, has 17,500 followers and notes the Freedom Chain was “Organized and lead by God.”
“God’s the one organizing and leading this … we all know that,” said one of the group’s organizers who goes by the name Mukesh Freedom in a February 21 Facebook video post.
“This freedom chain thing is mainly about creating love, peace, and unity. I know it sounds a little corny … imagine millions of people across Canada holding hands and doing one big wave.”
Of note is that Freedom was fired from his job last year as an actor because he attended a Freedom Rally in Toronto.
According to a post from one of the group’s administrators, Freedom Chain 2022 will unite Canadians to call for an end to COVID mandates.
“We are all in this together. Spread it far and wide. Holding hands coast to coast in a massive showing of Canadian Unity,” the group says.
