In the spirit of our ongoing weather work around the globe, here is a rare occurrence, an “ice halo” seen over New Mexico, after an arctic blast of bitterly cold air made its way across the United States, causing temperatures to plummet below freezing in dozens of cities.
The optical phenomenon was captured by Texan photographer, Joshua Thomas, above the town of Red River, where there have been sub-zero temperatures.
The rings and arcs in the sky are formed by light, interacting with ice crystals, suspended in the atmosphere, during the cold weather.
