I’m not entirely sure if this TV episode of Animal Planet is partly fictional, entirely fictional, or non-fictional with fictional computer graphics. But it makes a great yarn.
It’s a latter-day Avatar of the deep. It’s apparent message is that there is a type of ape which took to the seas millions of years ago and became, essentially, mermaids, travelling in groups, communicating, using tools that incorporate stingray stingers, and raising their young underwater.
The remains of one are said to have washed up on a Washington beach and a second was found in the belly of a shark. The film is allegedly in part the scientific reconstruction and interpretation of this second set of remains.
An underlying current of the film is is a protest against the Navy’s use of sonar which kills creatures.
It’s over an hour long and the messages at the end say that at least part of it is fictional. If you don’t mind finding out at the end that it was just a great fish tale, then here’s an episode of Animal Planet entitled Mermaids.
I can say that many have contended that the ancient Annunaki in fact ran genetic experiments that produced mermaids, satyrs and centaurs. Here is one description that leaves out the mermaids: “It has been said that the ‘myths’ of centaurs, satyrs, unicorns, dragons, elves etc. were the results of early genetic experiments of the Anunnaki.” (1)
Here’s a similar allegation made in a work on ancient civilizations that includes mermaids.
“According to Edgar Cayce, the ‘fall of man’ was an event recorded symbolically in Genesis where souls from heaven for the first time descended to the earth plane to began incarnating. The first wave of souls (“the sons of men”) [Anunnaki?] to incarnate became entrapped in the earth plane accidentally, through their misuse of free will, where they projected their own thought forms into physical beings we nowadays only know as mythological creatures like the centaur, the satyr, the mermaid, and so on. (According to the Paul Solomon readings these also included these ‘large beasts,’ which probably would refer to dragons/dinosaurs.) …
“One of Edgar Cayce’s sessions speak of half-human beasts, varying from the size of midgets to giants, that began to populate earth from some point in time, but were mostly wiped out after the great flood; According to his readings, this eventually became the basis for the legendary creatures of Greek and Roman mythology; like the unicorn, mermaid, minotaur, cyclops, and the satyr.” …
“Jon Peniel, author of the book: ‘Children of the Law of One & The Lost Teachings of Atlantis (1998),’ wrote the following:
“‘You have probably heard of mythological beings such as the Minotaur, Centaur, Mermaid, etc.. The Minotaur, had a bull’s head and a human body, the Centaur, a human head and torso with a horse’s body. You may also have seen pictures of Egyptian ‘gods’ with animal heads and human bodies, or animal bodies and human heads (like the Sphinx). In the Pacific regions, ancient drawings and carvings of ‘bird headed’ humans can be found on both sides of the ocean. Why do you think so much of this exists? Many legends and myths have some foundation in fact, and this is no exception. The ancient teachings from Atlantis, reveal that such creatures did indeed exist, and that their origins were not what you might expect – they were the fallen angelic beings from the ‘first wave’ of materialization on earth.'”(2)
Here’s another extrapolation from Edgar Cayce that does name the Anunnaki:
“Sometime before his death in 1945, Edgar Cayce, the ‘Sleeping Prophet,’ made several startling revelations about humanity’s origin: that Adam and Eve were not the first humans; that the first humans ‘materialized’ here from another, higher dimension; that they were divine, god-like beings who came to this dimension as thoughtform projections. They materialized in the guises of the hybrid fantasy creatures mentioned in mythology—the Sphinx, the unicorn, the satyr (i.e., ‘goat-demon’), the mermaid, the entire myriad of fantasy creatures that were thought to be only myth or legends.
“These pre-Adam humans came to this dimension as a lark. They thought it would be ‘fun.’ But the more they had sex with the animals and each other, the more they ate and partook of this dimension, the more their thought-form bodies congealed. Eventually, they were unable to return to the homelands of the higher dimensional realms and became trapped in this dimension. The entrapment lasted for hundreds of thousands of years. Cayce hinted that a race of extraterrestrials had been enlisted to attempt to ‘rescue’ the hapless pre-Adam humans.
“Cayce did not name the extraterrestrials but referred to them as ‘the sons and daughters of the Most High.’ This was a euphemism for the alien race known as the Anunnaki—the sons and daughters of Anu. Their genetic creation of the race of Adam was but a step in a series of steps designed to help free the entrapped souls and to create ‘safe vessels’ for them that could be evolved, unlike many of the hybrid creatures who could not be taught. (In this light, the human species is a transitional state that we seem to be stuck in.)” (3)
So, not trying to press the point too finely, but I must say I enjoyed the graphics, analysis, and interpretation of this show, fictional or not, especially in these times when we may see things at least as wonderful but in our case not fictional at all.
