Some tough choices have to be made around commenting and maybe I could hear your opinions on the matter.
Right now anyone can comment, which means the site gets hit with a lot of trolls and trawlers. So I get 30-60 comments a day from people advertising penis extenders, sex sites, Russian women wanting to emigrate, people wanting simply to get their URLs on other sites, etc.
Earlier that was no big deal because very few of your comments were getting swept up in Akismet so I simply deleted all the corruption.
But lately 100 of your comments a day have also landed up in Akismet along with the 60 or so sex ads. Now I find myself having to go through each comment and sort them out, etc. I have to rescue your comments, send them to “proposed,” go to another screen and approve them, etc. I also have to answer emails asking me why I’m not approving your comments, would I post a comment, etc. It’s getting to be a significant time commitment on a daily and ongoing basis.
Moreover, some people with no commitment to this sathsang (a “sathsang” is a community of truthseekers) stop in and drop off comments that we’re all whackos for studying UFOs, believing that 9/11 was an inside job, or listening to ghosts and extraterrestrials. Or they are Obama haters or fundamentalists or anti-big government people. Again I have to weed out their comments.
So, whereas I’ve been against limiting comments, I’m now seeing the advantages of limiting comments to “members” – people who have actually registered with the site. No more ads for sex sites or Russian women, or anti-Muslims and angry scientists. No more needing to wade through 100 comments a day.
Everything I can do to save time is welcome.
So please tell me how you feel about restricting comments to members of the site.
Thanks,
Steve
